Boreal Series – Boreal Beast

This is on of the best fruits for flavors and aromas. The fruits are medium in size averaging 2 grams per berry. It’s fruit has more firmness than many other haskap. The plants grow upright and slightly spreading and are one of the more vigorous growers. This variety is good for pollination of both Beauty and Blizzard because it has bloom time which overlaps with both and is genetically compatible. It ripens about a week after Blizzard, but fruit can hold on even longer. Making it good for mechanical harvesting.

For Pollination:

If mechanically harvesting fruits, plants solid rows of varieties, but make sure Beast rows are next to Blizzard or Beauty rows.

If hand picking fruit, yields will be a bit higher if varieties are mixed within rows. Many growers are happy with a compatible pollinator plant every 4 or 5 plants (20 to 25% ratio). Beast would be the pollinator for either Blizzard or Beauty.

Examples:

If one wanted mostly Blizzard production, plant a Beast every 4 or 5 plants.

If one wants mostly Beauty production, plant a Beast every 4 or 5 plants.

if one wants mostly Beast production, plant a Blizzard every 4 or 5 plants.

(Blizzard blooms earlier than beauty making it a better pollinator for Beast than Beauty)
