VIKING ARONIA BERRY
Aronia melanocarpa
Viking is the most productive cultivar of the Aronia yielding as high as five tons per acre. The fruits are known as one of the super fruits for containing some of the highest levels of phytonutrients. Up to 12 pea size berries that form a loose cluster of fruits, which are deep purple to black. Fruits ripen in late summer and are easily harvested by hand or by mechanical methods.
The fruits are seldom eaten fresh as they are undesirable because they are mostly dry with acidity, hence the common name "Chokeberry." Uses of the fruits are for juices, wines, marmalade, and teas. The fruits are usually blended with other fruits for higher flavors. Due to the high nutritional value of the fruits, there is a growing industry for Aronia berry consumption in the U.S. Plants are cold tolerant. Hardiness Zones 4-7.
