CARA'S CHOICE BLUEBERRIES

Vaccinium corymbosum

Origin: USDA- New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station

Highbush type cultivar. The mature height is 4 feet and slightly spreading for ease of hand and mechanical harvesting. Fruits ripen July 15 th in South Haven, Michigan, so is considered early midseason ripening. Yields are consistent at 10-12 pounds per plant.

Fruit size is medium, averaging 140 berries per pint, a very desirable size for u-pick growers. Fruits have a very sweet, highly aromatic flavor. Consumers have raved about the superior flavors and texures of each fruit. The berries have excellent firmness with small dry stem scars. The fruits have great eye appeal in the fresh markets, the berry colors are light powdery blue and retain the color post - harvest. Great eye appeal.

Cara is highly recommended for the fresh markets and u-pick. One of our U-Pick clients in southern Michigan recommended that we re-introduce this favored blueberry variety for other growers. Plants are available in 72 cell plugs and # 1 containers for spring of 2024. Hardiness Zones 5-7 (South North).

Grow Guide

PLANT USES: Highbush Blueberry is one of the Original Native Fruit Plants in North America, so when you plant you are replacing our native species. You can use them as a fruiting fence and for wildlife food. The blueberry Is very nutritious and is a fibrous fruit containing the highest amount of antioxidants of any fruit or vegetable. It is also a four season ornamental.
WATER REQUIREMENTS: Moist during the growing season. Rule of Thumb is 1 inch per week during the growing season and until the plants become dormant.
FERTILIZER REQUIREMENTS: Medium rate acid type fertilizer.
