Description
ELLIOT BLUEBERRY
Vaccinium corymbosum
Origin: USDA
High-bush type cultivar. Height is 5-7 feet, upright and slightly spreading. Ripening date is September 1 in the South Haven, Michigan area. Yields are consistently high, 10-20 pounds per bush at maturity.
Fruit size is small to medium averaging 75 berries per cup. Quality of the berry is very firm and has no picking scar. The berry is light blue and has a good mild flavor when fully ripe. The flavor is very tart until 60 percent of the berries are ripe. Harvesting can be done by hand or mechanically. Elliott adapts very well for mechanical harvesting because the berries ripen simultaneously so that 70-80% of the berries can be picked at one time.
Marketing of the fruit is for fresh or process. The Elliott berry is the best quality and colored berry at this time of the year so it is a very good cultivar for the fresh market. Ornamental use is very good because of its upright growth habit, bluish-green leaf color and late blooming flowers. Fall color is orange-red and long lasting. Hardiness Zones 7a-4b.
