ROBESON BLUEBERRY
Vaccinium corymbosum
Origin: North Carolina State University
This is a hybrid Pentaploid type which gives this plant a trait for positive characteristics. Use any early flowering highbush or rabbiteye variety. The height of a mature plant is 5 to 6 feet. Plants have high vigor, with an upright erect growth habit narrow spreading habit. Ripening time is early midseason, June 29 in zone 7, and fills the ripening period between the early highbush and late ripening Rabbiteye cultivars. Yields are average to most cultivars, allowing a harvest up to 12 to 15 pounds per plant.
Fruit size is medium averaging 1.3 grams per berry. Fruit quality is average and should be hand harvested for fresh markets. The flavor of the fruits are rated high in all taste comparisons with other cultivars. Robeson is very sweet with high aromas, a trait from the hybrid. Harvesting should be accomplished by hand.
The plant is adaptable for mechanical harvesting but the fruits are not suitable for fresh marketing, although excellent for the process markets. Consider to market the fresh fruits to local farm markets and u-pick farms. Plants adapt to a wide range of soil types and will grow in slightly higher pH soils . Plants exhibithigh vigor and are resistant to Phytophthora cinnamomi. Hardiness Zones 4-10.
