CHIPPEWA BLUEBERRY
Vaccinium corymbosum x angustifolium
Origin: University of Minnesota
Highbush/Lowbush type cultivar. Height of bush will be three feet at maturity. Ripening is early, approximately July 8th in Grand Junction, Michigan. Yield is similar to the cultivar Northblue at 3-7 pounds per plant.
Fruit size is medium to large being about 90 berries per cup. Flavor of the fruit is very sweet with little acid. The quality of the fruit is excellent. Small picking scar and firmness make the berries good for shipping. Hand harvesting is recommended but the upright/higher statured plant lends itself to mechanical harvest.
Marketing should be for fresh, being that the fruits are firm and attractive. Ornamental use is good if the choice in the landscape requires a four foot upright bush. The cultivar is self-fruitful, so one accent plant in a landscape will have full yields. Hardiness is one of the main attributes for the Chippewa. It will survive and produce fruit in colder regions where temperatures can reach minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Hardiness Zones 7b-3a.
