CUMBERLAND ROSEMARY

Conradina verticillata

Cumberland Rosemary is a low growing plant native to the Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee and Kentucky. It is considered an endangered species due to many changes in the habitat in the areas. Steve Breyer, the owner of Tripple Brook Nursery in South Hampton, Ma., selected a plant of the species collected from the wild plateau. Steve shared this plant with Hartmann’s to propagate for naturalizing landscapes.

The Cumberland variety will spread gradually and top out at 4 inches. It spreads 6-8 inches per season. Needle-like leaves are evergreen and fragrant, reminiscent of culinary rosemary and can be used as a substitute for the herb. Branches can be dried and enjoyed as a hanging fragrance and the scent of Rosemary is known to repel insects.

Cumberland will grow in partial shade to full sun. It thrives in sandy to gravely soils. It is drought-tolerant, and is content growing in moist soils. Tiny lavender flowers, which bloom in May and June, adorn every stem from the from the center of  the plant to its terminus. The plant is cold tolerant to USDA Zones 5 to 8.
