Description
AVONBLUE BLUEBERRY
Vaccinium corymbosum
Avon was one of the first Southern Highbush type cultivars released by the University of Florida. Arthur Elliott, George Abercrombe, and Patrick J. Hartmann the Florida blueberry Pioneers encouraged the states release. Avon was a very productive variety in the 1980’s and because of other fine characteristics, we are offering it once again. A mature bush is upright, 4 feet tall with a narrow crown.
The plant is moderate in growth and easy to maintain compared to many of the southern highbush varieties. Ripening time is May 15 in Northern Florida, so considered an early midseason variety. The yields of 8 to 10 pounds per plant are realistic every year. Flowering occurs later than most cultivars, so damage from late spring frosts has been minimal.
Fruits are considered large, about 65 berries per cup. The flavor is outstanding, mostly sweet. Therefore, the variety was named after Arthur Elliotts sweet wife, Avon! The light blue fruits are attractive, for fresh markets. The stem scars are small and dry and all of the berries have exceptional firmness. Harvesting can be accomplished by hand or mechanically. The fruits are concentrated ripening harvesting in 3 pickings.
Marketing fruits fresh market due to the fine quality and flavors. Avon has resistance to stem canker. Plant sizes 72 cell plugs and 12-18 inch are available this year. Hardiness zones 6-9
