MAKEDONIA RED POMEGRANATE

Punica granada

The "Makedonia Red" Pomegranate variety originated in Makedonia area of Greece. This variety was discovered in a garden by Bass Samaan, a plant enthusiast and collector from Pennsylvania. Bass indicated the variety was planted in Bethlehem, PA by a Greek immigrant who brought this exceptional variety from Greece. It has been proven to be a hardy plant in a backyard setting with high yields.

The Makedonia Red is surprisingly cold-tolerant, shrubby tree hardy to USDA Zone 7. At maturity, the plant is 10' tall and is slightly wider. It will yield up to 140 red-orange fruits - 4 inches in diameter. Like a typical pomegranate, these too are bright red inside, full of sweet juice. The ruby berries are high in nutrients, still another reason for their popularity among the health conscious.

It is beloved for the beauty of the flowers, which are bright red-orange and pendular in shape. The hummingbird is drawn to the flower because of it's sweet nectar, and bees frequent them in and act of pollination. Many people plant just a single tree for beauty's sake, waiting for it to flower in red and then fruit in red.

The plants do not need protection during winter in a location that stays above 15 F. They can be grown successfully in containers in colder climates and then moved inside in the winter.
