Description

PATTY SEABERRY

Hippophae rhamnoides

Seaberry bushes produce bright orange fruits and are extremely high in nutrients. The pea size orange ruits are borne on long clusters and ripen uniformly so harvest can be made at one time. The fruits are seldom eaten fresh from the plants because they are very tart, so blend them with sweeter fruits in preserves or drinks. The fruits can be frozen or canned for preserving.

The plants are spreading and will grow to a height of 5-6 feet tall. The plants do have thorns, so for ease of harvest it is recommended to train the stems on a trellis. The plants have high vigor so pruning should be done once during the summer after harvest and once when the plants are dormant.

Plants need cross pollination, so plant a ratio of no more than 6 female to 1 male variety. Our varieties were selected from seed grown by a grower in Michigan. The two selected varieties are Freddie which is the male and Patty the female variety. Plants are cold tolerant to USDA Zones 4 to 7.
